Welcome to our Humanities Curriculum

At St Andrew's Academy, our Humanities curriculum consists of the following subjects: History, Geography, Religious Education (RE) and French. Our students are offered a broad and balanced humanities education, aiming to cultivate a deep understanding of the world we live in, preparing students for knowledge and skills vital for life beyond school.

History

History is more than just dates and events - it's the understanding of the stories and people who shaped the world we live in today. Whilst the national curriculum and topic based learning is used as an anchor in which the teaching is developed, the past is used to develop the Learning for Life skills such as empathy and critical thinking.

Geography

Geography helps our students to make sense of the world around them, encouraging exploration, curiosity and environmental stewardship. Our Geography curriculum prepares our students for life in their local area and beyond with map reading and fieldwork skills developed alongside our Duke of Edinburgh and Forest Schools curriculums.

Religious Education (RE)

Our RE curriculum runs all the way from Year 7 to our Further Education campus. It is developed in a way to foster respect and understanding of diverse belief systems, preparing our students for life in a multicultural world. Using the Derby RE syllabus as a starting point, students develop their understanding of World Religions, Ethics, Values and Cultural Awareness.

French

Our French curriculum goes opens doors to new cultures, focusing on the basic communication skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students are encouraged to use French in a practical application, using it in everyday situations to build confidence and fluency. We go beyond the traditional langauge learning by incorporating interactive and sensory experiences such as food tasting, celebrating the French culture.
